Sam Powell

Sam Powell
Ambassador and Clinician

Sam Powell uses a holistic approach to working with horses, an approach he credits his father with teaching him. Unlike standard training philosophy, Powell introduces his clients to horse culture and shows how to work with the horse's instincts, and he feels that the sound of the human voice can calm even the wildest horse.

However, Powell admits that it took him several ruined horses and countless injuries of his own to stop using the raw force of standard training methods. Powell’s quest for a better way led him to research his Native American heritage, psychology, spiritualism, acupuncture and mysticism. And that led him to agree with his father’s premise: the right path is the quiet path. It also led to Powell developing a training method he calls “Teaching by Asking,” which is based on respect, trust and understanding rather than brute force.

Powell has conducted clinics across North America, as well as in Germany and Australia. With the opening of his new facility and the development of The Well Horse Program, which incorporates his "Teaching By Asking" training methods, Sam is progressing torward the realization of his goal of teaching more people to understand and help their own horses have a better life through better education.

As with other successful clinicians, Powell is applauded for his communication skills. Bob Loomis, one of the most respected reining trainers in the industry, said about Powell's demonstration, ''I thought the colt-breaking demonstration was absolutely excellent, one of the finest I have ever seen.''

Powell has also has written extensively about his training methods, including a book called “Almost a Whisper,” and produced a video series. Sam Powell's home is his Rockvale, Tenn. ranch where he has worked with country music stars such as Reba McEntire and Tanya Tucker. Through his training program, he has also worked with equine stars such as Playboys Habit, AJQHA World Champion Cutting Horse; Colonel Rey Lena, NCHA and NRHA money earner; and Lenas Gyrator, NRHA Super Stakes Open Champion.
